The 2024 deadlines on the earlier version of this page are closed. The comparison below covers four entry routes for the 2027 Sony World Photography Awards. It is a selection from one organizer, not a ranking of all photography contests or a promise that entry is worthwhile for everyone.

Last checked: October 30, 2026. Always reopen the linked rules before submitting. A deadline is a specific time in the stated time zone, not midnight in your location.

Dated entry-route reference

CompetitionDeadline (GMT)Who and whatEntry cost
Student — clarification needed27 November 2026 — time conflict: overview says 16:00; rule 3.1 says 13:00. Confirm with organizer.Ages 18–30 in a qualifying higher-education photography program; 5–10 images responding to the brief.Free under the published rules.
Single Image (formerly Open)5 January 2027, 16:00Standalone photographs; see category and image-date rules.Up to 3 images free; optional additional-image bundles cost extra.
Youth5 January 2027, 16:00Age 19 or younger on closing date; up to 3 images.Free.
Series (formerly Professional)12 January 2027, 16:00A body of work, with category-specific submission and publication requirements.Free under the published rules.

Student is not a confirmed-ready entry recommendation. On October 30, its overview/rule 1 still said 16:00 GMT while rule 3.1 said 13:00 GMT. Rule 2.1 allowed images from the preceding 18 months, while rule 3.7 specified January 1–November 27, 2026. Obtain the organizer’s written clarification of both conflicts before relying on eligibility or the closing time. The current Single Image route separately requires photographs taken in 2026.

Understand judging and rights

Single Image is judged as an individual photograph, while Series evaluates the submitted body of work. Youth uses its own selection process, and Student assesses the set brief. Enter work that fits the selected route rather than sending the same files everywhere.

Single Image, Youth and Series clause 7.2 describe a three-year promotional license, with detailed conditions. Student needs separate clarification: clause 3.6.5 combines an old April 2024 reference with an indefinite license, while clause 7.2 describes three years after April 2027. We cannot determine which conflicting term the organizer intends to apply. Keeping copyright is not the same as granting no usage rights; read the full terms and resolve the ambiguity before accepting them.

Check the entry, not just the prize

  1. Confirm your age, country/program eligibility where relevant, image creation/publication dates and category.
  2. Read the fee and any optional upgrade separately. Record the total cost you are choosing, not only “free to enter.”
  3. Check originality, manipulation/AI, wildlife ethics and model/property permission requirements. Keep original files and a truthful description.
  4. Export exactly the requested file format, size and color space, without adding prohibited watermarks.
  5. Translate the deadline into your local time and submit early enough to resolve upload problems. Save the actual submission confirmation.

Three specialist contests to compare with a general award

A wildlife portfolio, a food story and an iPhone series may suit different competitions. These are examples of distinct entry requirements, not an overall ranking. The organizer pages below list the following dates at this review; reopen them before committing time or paying a fee.

CompetitionPublished entry closeDecision that matters before editing
Wildlife Photographer of the Year3 December 2026, 11:30 GMTNatural History Museum rules prioritize truthful, ethical wildlife work. They prohibit baiting, including food/feeders, scent or sound used to obtain the photograph. Check the adult or young competition rules and the permitted-adjustment guidance.
World Food Photography Awards7 February 2027, stated as midnight GMTThe range includes growing, harvesting, cooking and eating, not only styled dishes. Its terms prohibit generative AI from creating, replacing, extending or materially reconstructing image elements.
iPhone Photography Awards31 March 2027; the entry page does not specify a closing time or time zoneEntries must be captured on iPhone or iPad. The rules allow iOS editing apps but prohibit alteration in desktop image-processing programs. Keep the original for verification.

World Food Photography Awards is the current name of the competition previously called Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year, as its terms explain. Its rules also distinguish retaining copyright from granting an irrevocable license for uses associated with the awards and exhibition. Read the complete license, archive and withdrawal provisions before entering; a copyright-retention statement is not a complete rights summary.

Resolve an unspecified closing time with the organizer instead of assuming your own midnight. For wording such as “midnight GMT,” plan to submit earlier and confirm the interpretation if the exact cutoff matters. The downloadable calendar below still covers the four Sony routes; these specialist examples have not been silently added to that dated file.

Choose the entry route before editing the pictures

A standalone photograph and a series make different demands. A single image needs to communicate without neighboring frames. A sequence needs a reason for each image to remain: an opening context, development, a change of scale or perspective, and an ending that gives the set shape. Several individually strong photographs do not automatically make a coherent body of work.

The organizer’s current Series route requests five to ten images, while Single Image evaluates standalone photographs. Read the chosen category description before spending time on the export. If entering both routes, check their rules about using different bodies of work.

Use directories to discover, then verify with the organizer

A contest directory can help you find themes or approaching deadlines, but the organizer’s current terms determine eligibility, fees and usage rights. A countdown, search snippet or old winner’s page is not enough to establish the current rules. Keep the exact entry-route URL and the date you read it in your calendar.

CompareRecord before deciding
EligibilityAge, location, professional/student definition and image-date requirements.
SubmissionImage count, category, captions, file specifications and permitted alterations.
Total costEntry fees, optional bundles, printing, shipping or exhibition obligations that apply.
RightsWho may use the image, for what purposes, for how long and with what credit.
OutcomeActual prize terms, judging process, notification and any obligations of selected entrants.

A prominent jury or a large prize does not remove an eligibility conflict. Keep the Student route marked unresolved until the organizer clarifies the contradictory deadline, image-date and license provisions already identified above. Choosing the earlier deadline alone would not resolve the other conflicts.

Edit the submission as a complete viewing experience

For a series, place all candidate images together at a consistent viewing size. Remove near-duplicates unless repetition has a clear purpose. Check whether the sequence depends on information the viewer has not been given. A caption can provide accurate context, but it should not claim events or relationships that the photographs do not support.

For a single-image entry, inspect the exact exported file at full size and as a smaller overview. Look for accidental crop problems, dust, export artifacts and text or watermarks prohibited by the rules. Preserve the original file and an edit history appropriate to the competition’s verification requirements.

Make one submission folder per route and version. Include the exported entries, final captions, relevant permission records, the rules reference and the confirmation received after upload. Avoid renaming or reordering files at the last moment without checking that the captions still match.

Separate an entry deadline from a personal production deadline

Work backward from the official closing time. Allow time to choose the sequence, verify eligibility, export, check files and resolve upload problems. For the confirmed 5 January 2027 16:00 GMT deadline, that corresponds to 08:00 Pacific Standard Time and 11:00 Eastern Standard Time in the United States. Use a date-aware time conversion for your own location, particularly where daylight-saving rules differ.

The calendar is a reference you maintain, not a live alert system. Record your next check and the person responsible. After submitting, save the confirmation; a prepared folder or started upload does not prove the entry was accepted.

Use a short, maintained calendar

The sortable contest calendar (ZIP; open the HTML file inside) records these four routes, their rules links and the unresolved Student deadline, eligibility and license conflicts. It includes a place to record the responsible editor and the next check. A new year in the title is not a substitute for checking the terms.

This calendar is a dated reference, not a live monitoring service. Recheck the organizer’s rules before entering and label closed entry routes clearly in your own calendar.

Decide whether the entry serves your work

Consider the relevance of the jury and audience, the rights granted, the time required and the cost of producing a compliant submission. Publicity and prizes are uncertain outcomes. A well-edited portfolio can remain useful even if an entry is not selected.

Use composition and crop planning when preparing a version, but do not crop away required context or misrepresent a documentary image. For selling work rather than entering an award, see photography income models.
