For a US passport, choose the application route before choosing an app. A printed 2 × 2 inch photograph and an original photo uploaded for online renewal are different deliverables. An app’s “passport approved” label does not override the State Department’s instructions or guarantee acceptance.

This is a researched comparison, not an installed-app or acceptance test. No personal identity photograph was uploaded and no service was purchased. The earlier eight-app price ranking is removed because installation, export, renewal and printing costs were not verified on equivalent terms.
Do not replace the background or retouch the face
The State Department asks for an original, unedited image without filters or digital changes, including background alteration. If the background or light is unsuitable, retake the photograph against a real white or off-white background. Do not use beauty filters, AI face reconstruction, clothing generation or background removal to manufacture compliance. A refund promise covers a seller’s commercial terms; it cannot compel a passport examiner to accept an image.
Capture a usable original with a phone
- Read the instructions for the exact application. Check expression, glasses, head-covering and other requirements directly on the official page.
- Use even light and a real plain background. Separate the person from the wall enough to avoid a strong shadow.
- Position the camera at eye level and keep the head straight and fully visible. Have another person take the photo or stabilize the phone and use its timer; do not assume an arm-length selfie gives suitable proportions.
- Capture several originals without filters. Inspect sharpness, shadows, exposure and expression before choosing one.
- For online renewal, retain the original file and follow the application’s upload and positioning steps. For paper, prepare the required physical crop and verify the printed dimensions.
The iPhone timer instructions can help stabilize capture. They do not replace passport-photo requirements.
Printing: check the exact provider
USPS offers photo-taking services at participating locations. Walgreens advertises its own passport-photo service. These offers do not establish that every branch will print any customer-supplied layout. Ask the specific provider about the file, paper, finished size, price and whether it offers photo capture, file printing or both.
A 2 inch image at 300 pixels per inch is 600 pixels wide; that is output arithmetic, not a rule for every digital submission. A lab’s automatic crop or a printer’s borderless expansion can change the result. Measure the finished photo and head size. Check privacy and total cost before uploading
A passport photo is personal information. Read the named developer’s retention, deletion, processing and third-party policies. Yarsa’s published privacy policy discusses uploaded-photo access and third-party services; do not infer an on-device-only workflow from an App Store label. Check whether a trial renews, whether the digital file is included, and whether prints, shipping or expedited handling cost extra.
